Patrignani Maritime Museum

Pesaro    0000-00-00

Those travelling to the Marche can take the chance to visit its many museums: for example, in Pesaro there is the W. Patrignani Maritime Museum, hosted in Villa Molaroni, viale Pola 9. Dedicated to anthropology and ethnography, the structure is open from October to May, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30 am till 12.30 pm and Fridays from 4 pm till 7 pm, and from June till September on Saturdays and Sundays from 4 pm till 7 pm.

Established in 1988 thanks to the commitment and passion of retired professor Washington Patrignani, student of nautical history and technology, the Maritime Museum gathers fishermen’s items and several other symbols of life in the sea, collected over the course of the years by professor Patrignani himself, with the aim of creating a museum dedicated to the maritime culture. The Maritime Museum allows visitors to discover the daily life of those who work in and on the sea, as well as the routine of shipyards through “trabaccoli” (a type of vessel), images, garments and tool that the professor has collected.

Therefore, the museum still maintains and carries on the itinerary established by its founder, following his steps and arranging an educational tour focusing on the culture of the sea, displaying items used by sailors, revisited and interpreted on the basis of archive sources from the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Upon request, the Maritime Museum is available for extraordinary openings throughout the year; it offers a tour which unfolds and is articulated according to specific thematic choices, as shown by the arrangement of the exhibition areas: they range from the ship of Novilara to the colours, symbols and decorations of the ships, including relics and shipwrecks, along with new ways of fishing.

Other areas include the art of shipbuilding and dockyards, vessel types, figureheads and anchors.
The museum also offers an audio-visual and a conference room and is therefore the reference point for all those who want to gather precious information concerning the original traits of the local maritime reality or simply for those who want to retrieve the customs and traditions that have been handed down over the centuries.

In summary, it is a destination worth discovering to get know better a piece of our country’s culture: the culture of the sea.
